Our 3 Step Approach

By following our three-step approach, you can begin your journey toward a more connected and harmonious family life.

STEP 1

Trust and Open Communication

Building trust and fostering open communication are the cornerstones of a strong family relationship. At Asheville Family Counseling, we help your family create a safe space where every member feels heard and valued. Through our family therapy sessions, we teach you effective ways to communicate, resolve conflicts, and deepen your connections with one another.

STEP 2

Identifying and Addressing Issues

Understanding and addressing the underlying issues within your family is essential for lasting change. Our skilled therapists work with you to uncover the root causes of conflicts and emotional struggles. By focusing on these core issues, we develop personalized strategies that help your family heal and grow together.

STEP 3

Strengthening the Relationship

Our goal is to help you build stronger, more resilient family relationships that can withstand life’s challenges. Through our guided therapy sessions, we provide tools and techniques to enhance your family’s connection and mutual support. By working together, you will cultivate deeper bonds and a nurturing environment where everyone can thrive.

What Can You Expect?

At Asheville Family Counseling, we help families heal, connect, and grow—especially those navigating complex challenges, like Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), or as we like to call it, Persistent Desire for Autonomy.

Our work is grounded in the Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS) model, developed by Dr. Ross Greene. This evidence-based approach shifts the focus from control and compliance to partnership and problem-solving. It’s particularly effective for families with neurodivergent children, as it recognizes developing skills and unmet needs—not willful defiance—as the true source of challenging behavior.

Stacey Curnow, the founder of AFC, is the only Certified CPS Provider in North Carolina, and all of our counselors have received advanced training in the model. This shared foundation ensures every clinician is equipped to support families with compassion and clarity, helping them move from daily power struggles to lasting connection.

We also specialize in multi-generational family counseling, supporting not only traditional family units but also adult children and their parents. These relationships often carry the burden of long-standing attachment trauma—legacy burdens, as we call them—that can go back for generations. That means there’s no shame, judgment, or blame for anyone in the family. Often, no one had secure attachment modeled for them—but in our work together, you’ll learn what it looks like and have the chance to practice it in a safe, supportive space.

Whether you’re raising a neurodivergent child, reworking your relationship with your adult parents, or somewhere in between, our tailored therapeutic strategies will help you:

Build trust and emotional safety

Break out of reactive cycles

Understand each other’s needs and strengths

Create solutions that work for your unique family

We also offer an extensive library of blogs to support you between sessions, covering PDA, CPS, parenting, and family dynamics.

By tailoring our therapeutic strategies to meet your specific needs, we empower you to create relationships and a life you love.

Frequently Asked Questions

Family therapy focuses on the interactions and relationships within the family unit, addressing issues that affect the group as a whole. Unlike individual therapy, which targets personal concerns, family therapy helps all members work together to resolve conflicts and improve communication.

In most cases, family counseling is not recommended for children under 12. This is because effective family therapy relies on strong verbal communication, emotional insight, and abstract thinking – skills that are still developing in younger children.

However, families with young children can still receive meaningful support through Parent Coaching, especially when using the Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS) model. This approach focuses on helping parents understand and respond to challenging behaviors by building skills and strengthening connection through collaboration – not “consequences.”

Parent Coaching sessions are typically with the parent(s), but children are invited to join when appropriate. As long as your child has functional verbal skills and no significant language processing issues, this model is incredibly effective for addressing challenges and improving family dynamics, even with young children.

If you’re unsure what kind of support is best for your family, we’re happy to guide you—just reach out!

Consider family therapy if your family is experiencing ongoing conflicts, communication breakdowns, or significant stress that you can’t resolve on your own. Signs such as frequent arguments, emotional distancing, or behavioral changes in teens often indicate that professional support could be beneficial.

In family therapy sessions, your therapist will guide discussions to help identify and address underlying issues affecting your family. Sessions typically involve exploring each member’s perspective, improving communication skills, and developing strategies to resolve conflicts and strengthen relationships.

The duration of family therapy varies depending on the specific needs and goals of your family. Some families see improvement after a few sessions, while others may benefit from a longer-term commitment. Your therapist will work with you to create a plan that suits your family’s pace and objectives.

While it’s ideal for all family members to be involved, therapy can still be effective even if only some members participate. Those who attend can learn valuable skills and strategies to improve the family dynamic, which can positively influence the entire group over time.
