Discernment Counseling
If you and your partner are wondering whether to repair your relationship or separate, you’re not alone. Many couples reach a point where they need clarity before they can decide what comes next.
Let's Get Started
When you’re not sure whether to repair your relationship or move on
When couples begin searching for discernment counseling, they’re often in one of the most painful places a relationship can reach.
You may still care deeply about each other. But something has shifted. Conversations go in circles. Trust feels fragile. One or both of you may be quietly wondering: Should I leave?
Many couples find themselves caught between hope, loyalty, exhaustion, and fear of the unknown.
Discernment Counseling is designed for this exact moment – to help you slow down, understand what’s happened in the relationship, and gain clarity about the path forward.

Why couples reach out for discernment counseling
Most couples who seek discernment counseling aren’t looking for someone to tell them whether they should stay together or divorce.
They’re looking for a place where they can finally:
- talk honestly about what’s happened in the relationship
- understand why the same painful patterns keep repeating
- explore whether real change is possible
- decide whether to work on the relationship or move toward separation with greater clarity
Often couples say they simply want to feel less confused and less alone in the decision they’re facing.
Discernment Counseling creates a space where these conversations can happen thoughtfully and safely.
Questions many couples are asking right now
If you’re considering discernment counseling, you may have asked yourself:
- “Is it too late to save our marriage…or is it best to cut our losses now?”
- “Do we really want to stay together…or are we staying because we’re too afraid of the unknown?”
- “If we stay for the kids…is that helping or hurting them?”
- “What if we make the wrong decision…by staying or by leaving?”
These questions are more common than many couples realize.
Sometimes one partner feels more certain about leaving while the other hopes to repair the relationship.
Other times both partners are longing for change, but neither knows how to start the conversation.
Discernment Counseling provides a structured and supportive way to explore these questions without rushing into decisions you may regret later.
Why discernment counseling can help
Discernment Counseling is very helpful if:
- One partner is leaning toward ending the relationship while the other hopes to repair it
- Both partners are unsure whether the relationship can continue
- You’ve tried couples therapy before but still feel stuck
- Trust has been damaged and you’re unsure whether it can be rebuilt
- There’s been addiction, betrayal, emotional withdrawal, or years of disconnection
- Conversations escalate quickly or end in shutdown
- You feel torn between love, responsibility, and exhaustion
Many couples arrive at a crossroads but don’t yet have the clarity to make a life-changing decision.
Discernment Counseling helps couples slow down enough to see the situation clearly.
What about staying together for the kids?
One of the most common and painful questions couples face is:
“Should we stay together for the kids?”
Parents often worry deeply about how separation might affect their children. Many feel torn between protecting the family structure and acknowledging the pain within the relationship.
Discernment Counseling creates space to explore this question thoughtfully. Together we look at:
- what children experience when parents remain in high conflict or emotional distance
- what children experience when parents separate thoughtfully and respectfully
- how your current relationship patterns may be affecting the family system
For many parents, this process helps them move from fear-based decision making to thoughtful, intentional choices about their family’s future.
What makes discernment counseling different from couples therapy?
Discernment Counseling is not traditional couples therapy.
Rather than immediately trying to work through the problems in the relationship, we begin by understanding how the relationship reached this crossroads.
In our work together we often explore:
- the interaction patterns that keep pulling you back into conflict or distance
- how trauma responses such as fight, flight, freeze, or collapse appear in your relationship
- the internal parts of each partner that want to stay, leave, protect, or withdraw
- what would actually need to change for the relationship to feel safe and sustainable
The goal is clarity before commitment.
What sessions look like:
Discernment Counseling is usually a short-term process of 1–3 sessions.
During our time together we:
- explore the history of the relationship
- identify patterns that have created pain or distance
- clarify what each partner wants moving forward
- assess whether meaningful change feels possible
Each partner has space to speak honestly while we work toward understanding rather than blame.
What you'll leave with:
- A clear understanding of your relationship cycle.
- Language for the attachment wounds and protective strategies underneath it.
- Greater clarity about whether to pursue repair or separation.
- A framework for navigating difficult conversations.
- Collaborative problem-solving tools for addressing intimacy, parenting, finances, boundaries, and future decisions.
- Guidance for talking with children in developmentally appropriate ways.
- Clear recommendations for next steps, whether that’s continued discernment, healthier separation, or a Couples Counseling Intensive.
What couples often discover in Discernment Counseling
Couples often come into Discernment Counseling feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or afraid that the relationship has reached an irreversible point.
Many are exhausted from years of painful conversations that seem to go nowhere. Others are quietly carrying doubts they haven’t felt safe to say out loud.
What many couples discover through this process is not necessarily immediate answers but something equally important: clarity and understanding.
They begin to see patterns that previously felt confusing or personal.
They understand how trauma responses like shutting down, withdrawing, or escalating conflict have shaped their interactions.
They recognize the ways both partners have been trying – sometimes unsuccessfully – to protect themselves from pain.
For some couples, this clarity opens the door to renewed commitment and meaningful repair.
For others, it allows them to make the difficult decision to separate with greater compassion, honesty, and respect, especially when children are involved.
And for many, the greatest relief is simply this: They no longer feel trapped in uncertainty.
Instead of making decisions from fear, exhaustion, or pressure, they’re able to move forward with greater awareness, intention, and care for themselves and each other.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does Discernment Counseling include?
Discernment Counseling is designed to be focused, efficient, and deeply supportive from the very beginning.
Each session includes:
- A pre-session, in-depth survey for each partner, so we can hit the ground running
- A full two-hour session together
- Targeted follow-up support, such as brief responses to secure messages or a short check-in call when something time-sensitive arises
- A detailed written summary after the session, highlighting key insights and next steps
I provide a written summary so you can be fully present during our time together, rather than trying to remember everything. Most couples find this incredibly helpful, as it’s natural to forget important parts of the conversation. You don’t have to hold it all. I will.
Investment: $600 per session
If you decide to move forward with a Couples Counseling Intensive, your Discernment investment can be applied toward the Intensive. (More information about this option is provided in the FAQs below.)
We’ve already separated. Can Discernment Counseling still help us?
Yes, Discernment Counseling can be very helpful even when you’re already separated.

Is Discernment Counseling covered by insurance?
No. Discernment Counseling is not covered by insurance.
Insurance companies require that services meet criteria for medical necessity, meaning they must be focused on diagnosing and treating a mental health disorder using established billing codes. Discernment Counseling doesn’t fall into that category.
Discernment counseling is a structured decision-making process for couples who are uncertain whether they want to repair the relationship or move toward separation. Because the goal is clarity and relational decision-making rather than treatment of a mental health diagnosis, there is no appropriate insurance billing code for this type of service.
For that reason, Discernment Counseling is offered as a private-pay service. Many couples find that the focused nature of the process helps them gain clarity more efficiently than traditional weekly therapy, which can make it a valuable investment during a difficult and uncertain time in their relationship.
How many discernment sessions do couples usually need?
Most couples complete 2-3 Discernment Sessions, depending on how quickly clarity begins to emerge.
I offer a maximum of three sessions, as this process is designed to be focused and intentional rather than open-ended. By the end of these sessions, couples have a much clearer understanding of what’s happening in their relationship and what direction they’d like to take.
After that, we identify the most supportive next step. This may include moving into a Couples Counseling Intensive with me for deeper, more focused work, or transitioning to ongoing “traditional” couples therapy with a trusted clinician at Asheville Family Counseling.
The goal of Discernment Counseling isn’t to solve everything, but to help you move out of feeling stuck and into a place of clarity.
What happens if we decide we want to work on the relationship after Discernment Counseling?
If you both decide you want to repair and rebuild the relationship, we’ll identify the most supportive next step for you as a couple.
I offer two options:
1. A Couples Counseling Intensive (recommended)
This is the primary way I work with couples beyond Discernment. Intensives allow us to move out of crisis mode and into meaningful, sustained change much more efficiently than weekly sessions.
If you’ve completed Discernment Counseling with me, we don’t start from scratch. Instead, we build directly on the clarity and momentum already established.
Your Discernment Session investment is credited toward the Intensive, and the structure is thoughtfully adjusted to reflect the work we’ve already done together.
This typically includes:
Two full days of focused, in-person work (5 hours per day), with 2 hours of individual sessions in the morning followed by 3 hours of couples work in the afternoon
- A 3-hour Post-Intensive integration session
Preparation and follow-up to support lasting change, including detailed written summaries of our work together and “need-it-now” support between sessions (short, secure messages and phone calls as needed)
This allows us to go deeper, more efficiently, while still offering a high-touch, personalized experience.
2. Ongoing Couples Therapy (through AFC)
If you prefer a more traditional weekly approach, I can connect you with a highly trained couples clinician at Asheville Family Counseling who works from a similar relational framework.
Do you offer Discernment Counseling for individuals?
Yes! Sometimes people know something has to change, but they’re not yet sure what kind of support they need — or whether a full Intensive is the right next step.
Discernment Counseling for Individuals offers a thoughtful, structured space to slow down, gain clarity, and experience my approach before making a larger investment in Intensive work.
This process is designed for individuals who may be:
- feeling stuck in recurring relational patterns
- navigating a major relationship decision
- processing estrangement or family rupture
- struggling with parenting dynamics or nervous system overwhelm
- wanting deeper, more focused support than traditional weekly therapy
Rather than jumping immediately into an Intensive, this offering allows you to “test the waters” and experience the depth, structure, and attachment-based lens of my work firsthand.
Many people leave with greater clarity, practical insight, and a stronger sense of whether an Intensive feels like the right next step for them.
Do you offer Discernment Counseling for families?
Yes! Family relationships can become incredibly painful and complicated over time — especially when misunderstandings, old attachment wounds, nervous system overwhelm, or cycles of conflict begin to harden into distance and disconnection.
Discernment Counseling for Families is designed as a lower-commitment way for families to experience my approach before deciding whether to move into a Family Counseling Intensive.
This process creates space to:
- better understand the patterns beneath the conflict
- identify where family members feel stuck or unseen
- assess emotional safety and readiness for deeper repair work
- begin practicing new ways of listening, validating, and responding
- determine whether an Intensive format feels like the right fit
For some families, these sessions provide enough clarity to move forward in a healthier direction. For others, they become an important bridge into the deeper, more immersive work of a Family Counseling Intensive.
The goal is not to force reconciliation or rush repair, but to create a more compassionate understanding of what has happened in the system — and what healing may require going forward.
Next Steps
If you and your partner are feeling uncertain about the future of your relationship - whether you’re asking “Should we stay together?”, “Should we stay together for the kids?”, or “Is it time to move toward separation?” - Discernment Counseling can help you explore those questions with clarity and care.
You don’t have to navigate this crossroads alone. If you’d like to learn more about scheduling Discernment Counseling, I welcome you to reach out.
I specialize in working with couples who have reached a critical turning point in their relationship and need clarity about what comes next. My approach integrates attachment science, trauma-informed therapy, and IFS-informed parts-based work to help partners understand the deeper dynamics driving conflict, withdrawal, and disconnection.
Rather than focusing only on surface-level communication skills, I help couples slow down and recognize the underlying patterns that shape how they relate to one another – often rooted in long-standing emotional wounds and nervous system responses.
Whether couples ultimately choose to rebuild their relationship or separate thoughtfully, my role is to provide a clear, grounded space where difficult conversations can happen with honesty, insight, and compassion.
Many couples tell me that simply being able to understand their patterns – sometimes for the first time – brings a sense of relief and clarity that allows them to move forward with greater confidence.
If and when you’re ready, I’m here to support you.
