Couples Counseling Intensive in Asheville

Transform Your Relationship in Just a Few Days

If you and your partner feel stuck in painful cycles of conflict, distance, or disconnection, a Couples Counseling Intensive will help you move forward much more quickly than traditional weekly therapy.

A Couples Counseling Intensive with Stacey Curnow offers a focused, immersive form of intensive couples therapy designed to help partners understand the deeper patterns creating conflict in their relationship and create meaningful change.

Rather than spreading the work across months of weekly sessions, the intensive provides a highly structured, high-support process where we dedicate extended time to understanding what’s really happening between you and creating new ways of relating.

Many couples describe this experience as accomplishing months of traditional therapy in just a few days.

Let's Get Started

Asheville Couples Counseling Intensives

Couples Intensives with Stacey Curnow are designed to support deep and lasting relationship transformation.

While the 3-Day Couples Counseling Intensive offers the most spacious and comprehensive experience, 1-Day and 2-Day intensives are also available depending on your needs.

During your Couples Counseling Intensive we work together to:

  • uncover the deeper patterns driving conflict
  • rebuild trust and emotional safety
  • repair attachment wounds
  • strengthen communication and connection
  • develop practical ways to support each other moving forward

The goal is to help you create a relationship where both partners feel seen, valued, emotionally safe, and connected.

Helping Couples Reconnect and Repair Their Relationship

Many couples who come to me feel exhausted from trying to solve the same problems over and over again.

You may recognize some of these experiences:

  • recurring arguments that never seem to resolve
  • emotional distance that makes you feel more like roommates than soulmates
  • cycles of criticism, defensiveness, and withdrawal
  • feeling misunderstood or alone in the relationship

Many couples have already tried traditional couples counseling and felt discouraged by slow progress or no progress at all.

Some felt blamed or judged. Others left sessions feeling even more hopeless about their relationship.

That isn’t the approach you’ll find here. My work is grounded in attachment science, trauma-informed therapy, and deep compassion for both partners.

Many painful relationship patterns are rooted in early attachment experiences that happened long before your relationship began. When these patterns are understood instead of blamed, couples often experience profound relief.

Instead of seeing each other as the problem, partners begin to recognize the underlying emotional wounds that drive their reactions.

This shift opens the door to real healing and reconnection.

Why Many Couples Choose a Couples Counseling Intensive

Many couples reach a point where weekly therapy simply isn’t enough to shift years of painful patterns.

By the time couples seek a Couples Counseling Intensive, the issues between them often run deep and may include:

  • trust injuries
  • long-standing communication breakdowns
  • emotional withdrawal or escalating conflict
  • trauma responses that trigger shutdown or defensiveness

A Couples Counseling Intensive creates the space to slow down and work through these patterns in a thoughtful and impactful way.

Instead of stopping just as the conversation begins to reach something important, we stay with the work long enough to understand what is really happening between you.

During a Couples Counseling Intensive we:

  • explore the deeper emotional dynamics shaping your relationship
  • practice new ways of communicating and responding to each other
  • rebuild emotional safety and trust
  • develop practical strategies for sustaining connection

Couples often say Couples Counseling Intensives allow them to make months of progress in just a few days, because we’re able to move beyond surface conversations and work directly with the patterns keeping the relationship stuck.

While couples experience approximately 18 hours of direct face-to-face counseling, the full Couples Counseling Intensive process involves well over 30 hours of clinical support when preparation, detailed summaries, integration work, and follow-up support are included.

This ensures that the insights and changes from the Couples Counseling Intensive continue supporting your relationship long after the sessions are complete.

The full Couples Counseling Intensive process

A Couples Counseling Intensive includes far more than the time spent together in the therapy room.

The full process includes:

  • approximately 18 hours of direct couples and individual counseling sessions
  • a 50-page pre-intensive workbook and preparation process
  • detailed written summaries after each session highlighting insights and next steps
  • a 3-hour post-intensive integration session
  • Need-It-Now support calls between the intensive and integration session when couples need guidance in real time

Altogether the Couples Counseling Intensive provides well over 30 hours of structured therapeutic support, designed to help couples not only gain insight but also create meaningful and sustainable change in their relationship.

Couples Counseling vs Couples Counseling Intensive

Many couples wonder how a Couples Counseling Intensive differs from traditional weekly couples therapy.

Traditional Weekly Couples Counseling

Weekly sessions typically last 50 to 60 minutes.

Just as conversations begin to reach something meaningful, the session often ends and couples return to daily life without enough time to fully process what’s happening between them.

For couples dealing with persistent negative interaction cycles, progress is too slow if it happens at all.

Couples Counseling Intensive

A Couples Counseling Intensive allows us to work together for multiple hours across several days.

This extended time allows us to:

  • explore deeper emotional patterns
  • understand long-standing relationship dynamics
  • practice new ways of communicating
  • rebuild emotional safety and trust

Instead of taking months to reach important breakthroughs, couples find the Couples Counseling Intensive format helps them make meaningful progress in a much shorter period of time.

The Couples Intensive Experience

Pre-Intensive Preparation

Your Couples Counseling Intensive begins before we meet.

You receive a 50-page Pre-Intensive workbook designed to clarify your goals, identify key relationship patterns, and help us begin our work with focus and intention.

The preparation materials include:

  • relationship questionnaires
  • guided reflection exercises
  • goal-setting tools
  • educational resources

The Couples Counseling Intensive is also complemented by Stacey’s book Repair Your Relationships: Reset, Reconnect, and Enjoy Your Most Important Relationships and its accompanying Guided Journal.

Couples Counseling Intensive sessions

During the Couples Counseling Intensive we alternate between individual sessions and couples sessions, allowing each partner space for personal reflection while also working together.

The typical 3-day Couples Counseling Intensive includes:

  • individual sessions for each partner
  • extended couples sessions
  • approximately 18 hours of direct therapeutic work

This format allows us to address both personal experiences and relationship dynamics in a way traditional therapy simply can’t.

Post-intensive Integration Session

Approximately 6 weeks after your Couples Counseling Intensive, we meet again for  a 3-hour Post-Intensive Integration Session.

During this session we:

  • reflect on insights from the intensive
  • identify areas of meaningful change
  • create a plan for continued growth

Integration is an essential part of the process, ensuring that the changes you begin during the intensive continue supporting your relationship moving forward.

Need-it-Now Support

Between your Couples Counseling Intensive and your Post-Intensive Integration Session you have access to short check-in calls if you need quick guidance or clarity.

These calls help you stay connected to the work when difficult moments arise.

Detailed Session Summaries

After each Couples Counseling Intensive Session you receive a detailed written summary highlighting key insights, relationship patterns, and next steps.

These summaries allow you to remain fully present during the sessions rather than worrying about taking notes and remembering everything.

Couples find these summaries incredibly helpful as they continue integrating the work after the Couples Counseling Intensive.

About Stacey Curnow

I specialize in working with couples who’ve reached a critical turning point in their relationship and want to understand what’s truly happening beneath the surface.

My approach integrates EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy), attachment science, trauma-informed therapy, and IFS (Internal Family Systems)-informed parts-based work to help partners recognize the deeper patterns driving conflict, withdrawal, and disconnection.

Rather than focusing only on communication techniques, we explore the emotional dynamics that shape how partners respond to each other.

When these patterns become visible, couples often experience a profound shift. Instead of feeling like adversaries, they begin to understand the pain and vulnerability beneath each other’s reactions.

Whether couples are rebuilding their relationship or navigating a difficult crossroads, I provide a grounded and compassionate space where meaningful change happens.

A Deep Dive into Your Personal Strengths and Less-Grounded Traits

To further enrich your experience, we’ll explore personality assessments such as the Enneagram. You’ll uncover and leverage your unique strengths, gaining insights into personal attributes that contribute to your relationship.

Understanding your Enneagram type also empowers you to navigate obstacles gracefully, preventing less-grounded traits from hindering your success.

What Couples Are Saying About The Counseling Intensive:

“I cannot express enough gratitude for the Counseling Intensive. Stacey, you blew our minds! The weekend spent with you was nothing short of transformative for our relationship. We feel incredibly fortunate to have found you.

Your guidance and expertise have helped us navigate through our challenges with clarity and understanding. The profound insights you offered were invaluable, nudging us gently towards a deeper understanding and connection.

After our weekend with you, we followed your recommendation and incorporated a “process commitment” into our daily routine. This morning, we started our day with meditation, and then a walk around the pond. This was meant to be a short stroll, but it turned into an hour-long journey filled with meaningful conversation and reflection.

Stacey, your approach is truly powerful, and the impact you’ve had on us is immeasurable. Thank you for helping us rediscover the strength and beauty in our relationship. We are forever grateful.”

The Intensive Experience

We’ll kick-start your transformative journey with a “Pre-Intensive.” As part of this experience, you’ll receive a 50-page workbook. This workbook is a crucial component of our preparatory process and is designed to enhance the effectiveness of our sessions. It contains tailored questionnaires to clarify your goals and aspirations. You’ll gain access to many valuable resources focused on skyrocketing your results.

The Intensive is also complemented by Stacey’s bestselling book, Repair Your Relationships: Reset, Reconnect, and Enjoy Your Most Important Relationships, and its accompanying Guided Journal.

The schedule includes hour-long individual sessions, followed by a 2-hour couples session, repeated over three immersive days. The Intensive also includes a 90-minute Post-Intensive Session to debrief the experience and reflect on areas of insight, relief, and transformation.

So, a couple’s intensive would offer over 20 program hours, 14 face-to-face hours, resources, assessments, & personalized treatment workbook, and weekday and weekend availability.

During the 90-minute Post-Intensive, we’ll engage in a comprehensive discussion about the subsequent phases of your journey towards ongoing growth and healing. This allows valuable time and space for crucial integration, enabling you to assimilate and apply the insights gained during the Intensive, fostering a more profound and lasting transformation. This Post-Intensive also ensures that you receive continuous support and guidance beyond the Intensive, prioritizing your sustained well-being and progress.

There’s also the option of “Mini-Intensives” to address any challenges that may arise in the future, providing tailored assistance when needed.

Want to Know Exactly How Real Couples Are Benefiting from the Intensive?

I’ve worked with many couples, and the work is almost always the same—we delve into the complex interplay between their current struggles and past wounds, much like noticing how a stone that strikes the surface of a pond creates far-reaching ripples.

I’ve now written about a few of these experiences in my blog, and you can read about them here, here, and here.

Discover What a Wall Street Journal Investigation Revealed About Counseling Intensives

Investigative journalist John Koten names the experience “high-impact therapy” and argues that it offers a more structured and effective approach (compared to “traditional” weekly or bi-weekly 50-minute sessions) to addressing relationship issues such as disillusionment, betrayals, and loss of connection. He cites that many couples report profound and rapid progress with the Intensive model. He concludes that this method provides a valuable alternative for couples seeking concentrated time to work on their relationship.

Counseling Intensive FAQs

Who can benefit from Counseling Intensives?

Counseling Intensives offer an ideal solution for those seeking swift and profound personal growth and transformation in their most important relationships. If you’re ready to catalyze change in your life and relationships, a Counseling Intensive provides a compelling option. Tailored to your specific needs and objectives, this accelerated counseling format enables clients to delve deeper and achieve desired results more rapidly.

Instead of the traditional weekly or bi-weekly 50-minute sessions over an extended period, a Counseling Intensive condenses the process into three dedicated days. This innovative approach streamlines the path to enduring transformation, eliminating the need for recurrent counseling appointments. Many liken the experience to a retreat, affording the opportunity to disconnect from daily obligations and fully immerse themselves in healing, self-reflection, and reconnection.

Why should I do a Counseling Intensive instead of a normal 50-minute counseling session?

A Counseling Intensive offers a more impactful and efficient alternative to traditional 50-minute counseling sessions. In a typical 50-minute session, valuable time is consumed by initial check-ins and closing discussions, leaving only around 30-40 minutes for substantial therapeutic exploration. In contrast, with 3 days of 4-hour intensive counseling sessions, you’re looking at a total of 12 hours of intensive counseling.

Considering a typical schedule of bi-weekly counseling sessions, which amounts to one session every two weeks, 3 days of 4-hour intensive counseling would be the equivalent of six months of bi-weekly counseling sessions! The Intensive experience truly allows for a concentrated focus on life-changing work, providing substantial progress and insights over a very short period of time.

How many Intensive Days should I schedule?

The number of Intensive Days depends on your specific goals for the Counseling Intensive. If we’re just starting our therapeutic journey together, I typically suggest a 3-Day Intensive to allow for comprehensive exploration and progress. However, if we’ve already begun our work together and you have specific, well-defined goals, it’s possible to achieve them within a shorter timeframe, such as a 1-Day Intensive spanning 4 hours. I’m here to assist you in determining the optimal number of days that align with your objectives and facilitate meaningful progress.

If I already have a primary counselor, can I do an Intensive as an adjunct to my current counseling?

Absolutely, you can certainly do a Counseling Intensive as an adjunct to your ongoing counseling with your primary counselor. In fact, it often complements your regular counseling sessions quite effectively, especially when you encounter specific challenges or feel particularly stuck in your progress.

Numerous counselors highly recommend their clients engage in Intensives with me for precisely this purpose. To guarantee smooth collaboration and coordination between myself and your current counselor, I kindly request that you sign a Release of Information. This ensures that we can work together seamlessly to maximize the effectiveness of your therapeutic journey.

Can my insurance help pay for Counseling Intensives?

Unfortunately, Counseling Intensives are typically not covered by insurance for a variety of reasons. Firstly, insurance companies often have strict criteria for reimbursable services, and the non-traditional format of Intensives do not meet these criteria. Additionally, the duration of Intensives, with longer sessions over a shorter period, do not align with insurance policies designed for shorter, weekly sessions. Furthermore, there are limitations on the types of counseling covered by insurance, and Intensives fall outside of these covered categories. Finally, the highly customized nature of Intensives can also pose challenges for insurance companies in standardizing reimbursement criteria. These factors collectively contribute to the unfortunate reality that insurance does not cover Counseling Intensives.

How much does a Counseling Intensive cost?

The cost of a Counseling Intensive varies depending on factors such as the number of days and the number of individuals participating. Each Intensive is meticulously crafted to ensure a unique and transformative experience. As we consider the possibility of embarking on this journey together, it’s crucial to recognize that it entails not only a significant investment of time but also a commitment of financial resources.

Allow me to share a story that may resonate with you – the tale of Picasso and the napkin. Legend has it that Picasso, when asked to sketch on a paper napkin, requested a million Francs in return. Perplexed by the seemingly high price for a drawing that took mere minutes, the admirer questioned the value. Picasso’s response was profound: “My dear, it took me a lifetime to be able to draw this sketch.” He wasn’t merely seeking compensation for the act; he sought recognition for the years of study, practice, and mastery that led to his ability to create a work of art swiftly.

I approach our work with the same dedication that Picasso brought to his art. The investment in the Intensive reflects not only the time spent during those days but also acknowledges the cumulative experience, expertise, and commitment I bring to our sessions. I am confident that, much like Picasso, I can help transform your relationship into a work of art once again.

When are payments due? Do you offer refunds?

Upon booking your session, a non-refundable deposit is due to secure your spot. To accommodate your budgeting needs, I can often offer flexible payment plans. The remaining balance is then due at least 2 weeks prior to the first day of your Intensive Session.

While I am able to reschedule your Intensive with at least 2 weeks’ notice, please note that all payments are non-refundable. This policy is in place due to the highly personalized and unique nature of the Counseling Intensive, ensuring that resources are allocated appropriately to meet your specific therapeutic goals while also respecting the investment of my time and energy.

What if I’m interested in a Counseling Intensive but I’m not 100% sure?
