If you’ve ever felt stuck in the same painful patterns with your child or teen – constant power struggles, shutdowns, or reminders that feel like nagging for everyone – it doesn’t have to be this way.
Over the years, I’ve worked with countless families who felt exhausted, overwhelmed, and unsure how to truly connect with their child. And time after time, I’ve seen what’s possible when we shift the entire family system using a powerful, research-backed model called Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS).
What Makes CPS Different?
Most traditional counseling approaches focus on “fixing” the child’s concerning behaviors. The result? Kids often feel judged, misunderstood, or controlled. Parents are often left feeling shut out, blamed, or somehow defective.
CPS flips the script.
It invites everyone – parents and children alike – into a compassionate, collaborative process rooted in curiosity. It helps each person express their needs and concerns directly, without threats, shutdowns, or meltdowns.
Instead of asking, “How can we get this child to comply?” CPS asks, “What’s getting in the way of this child’s ability to meet expectations? And how can we work together to solve that?”
And for many families, that powerful paradigm shift opens the door to trust, empowerment, and lasting change.
A Recent Example: From Distrust to Connection
In a recent Family Intensive I led, two teens arrived filled with eye-rolling distrust. They’d been locked in daily conflict with their parents, and no one really believed change was possible.
But over just one weekend, everything started to shift. By the end, those same teens were:
- Expressing their needs clearly
- Solving long-standing problems with their parents
- Taking initiative – because they wanted to
Why? Because we slowed everything down. We stopped trying to manage the 50+ expectations that overwhelmed them daily and instead focused on just three. That shift alone created a sense of safety they hadn’t known before.
What I saw firsthand is that kids in this model experience a kind of unburdening. When they’re no longer expected to meet an impossible number of expectations, and when their perspective is being accepted without judgment, something shifts.
Energy that was once tied up in defensiveness, shutdown, or resistance becomes available – and not just for solving the three problems we’re working on together, but for many more.
And from that place came insight, motivation, and connection – for everyone in the family.
This Isn’t Just Behavior Change. It’s Relationship Repair.
What I see again and again in this work is that most kids aren’t “unwilling” to talk to their parents. They simply don’t know how. They’ve often grown up in a system where their perspective wasn’t invited or valued, so over time, they shut down or act out.
And no, it’s not lost on me that many of their parents were once kids in that same system – having unilateral solutions imposed on them, too. So yes, I have deep compassion for these parents who never learned another way because it was never modeled for them.
CPS gives us another way in. And when we reduce the noise of constant reminders, punishments, or unmet expectations, something powerful happens:
Kids begin to feel safe.
They start to speak for themselves.
And parents begin to listen with curiosity and without judgment.
That’s when the real magic happens.
That’s when healing begins.
Is CPS Right for Your Family?
CPS is not for every family. It’s not for parents who are simply looking for a better way to “get their kid” to do anything.
But it is for families who are ready to:
- Slow down
- Reimagine their dynamic
- Build something more compassionate, connected, and collaborative
It’s especially powerful when your child has been struggling to meet everyday expectations – whether due to anxiety, neurodivergence, trauma, or just life feeling too hard.
If your child “doesn’t want to talk” or is always “shutting down,” CPS helps you understand why and how to gently invite them back into a relationship where everything can be figured out together.
Ready for Real Change?
If you’re longing for more peace, more connection, and more problems getting solved in a way that actually works, a Family Intensive may be the perfect fit.
Over the course of a focused 2- or 3-day experience, we’ll work together – yes, both parents and kids – to:
- Identify the root causes of what’s not working
- Learn a new framework for solving problems together
- Build skills in communication, emotional regulation, and mutual understanding
- Leave with clear, actionable next steps – and momentum
Spots for Fall 2025 Family Intensives are limited, and I’d love to support your family.
