One of the most common concerns I hear when couples are considering a Counseling Intensive is this: “It’ll only work if we’re both all in.”
On the surface, that makes sense. It feels logical. You may think, If we’re not equally committed, what’s the point? If one person’s resistant, how could this possibly help?
But I want to gently offer a different perspective.

In my experience, if one person softens a hard pattern, if one person leads with curiosity instead of criticism, if one person begins to regulate their nervous system, communicate their needs, and offers safety in a new way…the dynamic in the partnership transforms.
Sometimes slowly. Sometimes instantly. But always meaningfully.
Here’s something I’ve learned from years of working with couples in all stages of rupture, repair, and rebuilding: it’s actually rare that one partner truly doesn’t want to do the work. More often, they just don’t believe the work will make a difference.
And when someone seems resistant, it’s definitely not because they don’t care. It’s usually because they’ve lost hope that anything can really change. A protector part has taken the wheel.
That protector is often saying:
“I can’t do this again.”
“It won’t work.”
“I tried before and nothing changed.”
“I can’t put myself in that position just to be hurt again.”
But underneath that protector is part that’s tender and vulnerable. A part that’s been deeply wounded (usually in early childhood). A part that feels abandoned, lost, and alone. Afraid to fail one more time and feel heartbroken again.
And that makes so much sense.
That’s why I sometimes invite couples to begin with just a one-day Intensive. You benefit from extensive Pre-Intensive work. You receive five hours of focused in-person support and a two-hour follow-up session to help integrate the experience.
Our 5 hours in person offers a contained, supportive space to explore what’s possible. No pressure, just presence. And if, by the end of that day, something opens up and it feels right to continue, we’ll step into the next two days with deeper commitment. Those next days often become the heart of the transformation — where trust is rebuilt, patterns are rewritten, and lasting change takes root.
And if it doesn’t feel right to continue, that’s okay too. That one day still offers clarity, insight, and care. You’ll have taken a meaningful step, and you’ll still have the space to enjoy a beautiful weekend in Asheville together, reconnecting or simply resting in what you’ve discovered.
And if one partner chooses not to attend at all, that’s okay too. A solo 1-, 2-, or 3-day Individual Intensive will leave you feeling grounded, clear, and deeply resourced for whatever comes next in your relationship. Sometimes, the work reveals a new path forward together. Sometimes, it brings peace and resolution to a relationship that’s ending. It creates movement where there was once stuckness.
I remain confident that even when only one person engages in this work, everything can shift because when one person begins to heal old wounds, break reactive patterns, and lead from a calm and centered place, the entire system reorganizes. That change ripples out. It opens doors. It invites new possibilities. And that’s where transformation begins.
Let me just say this: everything changes when one person changes.
If this speaks to you, reach out. Let’s talk about what feels right for where you are, and how we might take this next step together.
You don’t have to do it all. You just have to begin. I’d be honored to support you.
