We’re delighted to highlight the compassionate, insightful, and refreshingly real presence of Matt Grotsky, MA, LCMHC, LCAS. Matt is one of those rare clinicians who combines a thoughtful, philosophical lens with deep practicality and warmth. He’s someone who can bring a bit of lightness and humor to even the most difficult conversations.
What Drew Matt to This Work
Matt’s journey into counseling began with a love of philosophy and a strong desire to help others, a combination that continues to shine through in his work.
After earning his MA in Mental Health Counseling from Lenoir-Rhyne University in 2019, Matt is EMDR certified and holds a credential as a Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist (LCAS), bringing additional expertise to his work with individuals navigating healing complex trauma, substance use, and recovery.
Areas of Specialty
Matt supports clients navigating:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Relationship struggles
- Substance use and recovery
His direct approach, paired with a kind presence and a touch of humor, creates a space where clients feel safe to be themselves and empowered to grow.
What It’s Like to Work With Matt
From your very first session with Matt, you’ll notice his thoughtful presence and genuine care. He’ll help you identify meaningful treatment goals and shape the therapy process around what works best for you. Matt draws from evidence-based practices and has a gift for using metaphors to make complex ideas easier to understand. He keeps things practical and grounded and, again, he’s genuinely funny. His ability to bring lightness into the room is one of the ways he helps clients carry what’s heavy.
What Lights Matt Up
When asked what he loves most about being a therapist, his answer was simple and beautiful:
“I love watching people achieve their goals.”
He also shared something we both wish more people knew: therapy can be life-changing, and it should be more widely accessible. A favorite piece of wisdom he often shares with clients:
“The only way out is through.” — Robert Frost
A Peek Into Matt’s Life Outside the Office
Outside of session, Matt enjoys hiking, reading, brunch with friends, and savoring time with his family (and plenty of coffee). He recently shared a quote that’s been resonating with him. It’s a beautiful reflection of his values and the integrity he brings to this work:
“When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth and tell the whole world: ‘No, you move.’” — Mark Twain
If Matt weren’t a therapist, he imagines he’d be a writer, and from my time spent with him, I have no doubt he’d be a powerful one.
If you’re looking for a grounded, compassionate, and, let’s be honest, genuinely funny guide to help you navigate anxiety, relationship challenges, trauma, or substance use recovery, Matt could be the perfect fit.
His humor brings levity to even the heaviest moments, making the therapeutic process feel more human and a little less daunting. I’m so grateful to have him on our team, and even more grateful that our clients get to experience his care.
