Trusting Your Inner Voice: Questions to Help You Connect with Self Energy

Learning to trust your inner voice through connecting with different parts of yourself, helps you blossom into a beautiful tree of life.

I’ve noticed that many of my clients struggle to trust themselves. They feel the quiet whispers of their intuition, that inner voice nudging them toward their truth—and yet they hesitate.

Within the Internal Family Systems framework, “parts” of you might worry about making mistakes, fear criticism, or feel overwhelmed by others’ expectations. These protective parts often try to shield you from discomfort, but in doing so, they can overpower the voice of your authentic Self, making it difficult to access your deeper intuition and inner wisdom.

But here’s the good news: you can learn to connect with your Self energy—that calm, compassionate, and wise part of you—and begin to trust yourself again.

You don’t have to ignore those protective parts; instead, you can listen to them, understand their concerns, and lead with Self energy to make decisions that align with your truth. Therapy is an incredible space to do this work and to learn how to bring more balance and clarity into your life.

Here are some questions to help you connect with your intuition and work with the parts of you that may be holding you back:

1. What is my truth at this moment?

Pause and ask yourself: What feels true to me, deep down? If parts of you feel resistant or uncertain, gently ask them what they are worried about. In therapy, we can explore how to soothe these concerns and reconnect with your inner clarity.

2. Do I have parts that fear making a change?

Are there parts of you that worry about being judged, misunderstood, or losing something important if you trust yourself? Instead of dismissing these parts, you can approach them with curiosity and compassion. Counseling can help you work with these fears so they don’t block your path forward.

3. Are there parts of me that feel stuck on someone else’s path?

Perhaps a part of you followed a career, relationship, or lifestyle based on what others expected, not what you truly wanted. Therapy can help you recognize these parts and guide them back to your authentic path with the support of your Self energy.

4. What would my Self energy choose if I trusted it completely?

Imagine making decisions from a place of calm, courage, and clarity. Therapy can help you identify and connect with your Self energy so you can lead your life with confidence and integrity.

5. Do I have parts that feel drained or stuck in old patterns?

Notice if certain beliefs, habits, or relationships are depleting your energy. Therapy can support you in listening to these parts and releasing what no longer serves you, making space for what aligns with your authentic Self.

6. How can I honor my Self energy and support my authenticity?

Living authentically isn’t selfish; it’s an act of self-care that creates space for growth and connection. Therapy can help you discover practices and boundaries that nurture your Self energy and allow you to live in alignment with your truth.

7. Am I open to understanding other parts of myself?

Sometimes parts of us hold strong beliefs or resist change because they feel it’s the safest option. Therapy can help you hold space for these parts while still connecting with your Self energy to make balanced, thoughtful decisions.

8. How am I maintaining my connection to Self energy?

Reflect on your daily practices and interactions. Are you engaging in activities that support calm and clarity, or are you being drawn into patterns that disconnect you from your intuition? Counseling can help you identify and strengthen habits that keep you grounded in Self energy.

A Fresh Start Is Always Possible

You don’t have to ignore or push away the parts of you that feel hesitant or afraid. Instead, you can listen to them, honor their concerns, and gently guide them with the wisdom of your Self energy.
