When I think about trust in relationships, I often find myself coming back to a powerful metaphor first introduced by Brené Brown: the marble jar.
In her analogy, trust is built by adding marbles to a jar, one by one, through small, consistent acts of care, honesty, and reliability. It’s a beautiful way to think about trust as something that grows over time, rather than something that appears fully formed.
But as I’ve reflected on this idea, I’ve found it helpful to expand on it—especially when thinking about relationships impacted by trauma or loss.
Why the Marble Jar Matters
In every relationship, trust isn’t something that just “happens.” It’s built through experiences, especially the moments when things don’t go well. Ruptures—disagreements, mistakes, or moments of hurt—are inevitable in any relationship. What matters most is how we handle those moments.
When you choose to repair after a rupture—by showing empathy, apologizing, or working together to understand and move forward—you’re not just solving the immediate problem. You’re adding a marble to the jar.
Over time, these small, intentional repairs strengthen your connection. They create a sense of safety and reliability that becomes the foundation of trust.
Why Trust Can Feel Harder for Some
If you’ve experienced early attachment trauma or betrayal in past relationships, building trust can feel like climbing an uphill mountain. One misstep may feel less like losing a marble and more like the whole jar being dumped out.
This response is understandable—it’s a reflection of how hard it is to believe in trust when your earlier experiences taught you the opposite. But the good news is, just like you can lose marbles, you can always start adding them back.
Rebuilding After a Spill
If your jar feels emptier than you’d like, try reframing it like this: “This is hard. I hate seeing the marbles spill out, but I know we can start adding them back in.”
Even when trust is shaken, every repair is a chance to rebuild. With time, effort, and patience, the jar fills again.
How to Add More Marbles
Here are some ways to add marbles to your trust jar in any relationship:
- Consistency: Follow through on what you say you’ll do. Even small things, like showing up on time or remembering a special day, make a difference.
- Empathy: Show that you understand and care about how the other person feels, especially in tough moments.
- Repair: When something goes wrong, own it. Apologize, talk it through, make amends and find a way forward together.
- Celebration: Recognize the good moments and celebrate them. Every act of kindness, laughter, or support adds to the jar.
What I’ve Learned from the Marble Jar
For me, the marble jar is a reminder that trust is a process. It’s built over time, one experience at a time. No one starts a relationship with a jar full of marbles. But as you navigate challenges, repair after ruptures, and consistently show up for each other, you fill your jar and create something truly strong and meaningful.
So, here’s my invitation to you: look at the relationships that matter most in your life. What’s one small way you can add a marble to the jar today?
