I’ve been moved by the thoughtful feedback on my recent post about Relationship Red Flags. It’s clear that these topics are resonating deeply, and many of you have reached out with your own stories and questions. I’m grateful for the conversations we’ve started, and they’ve inspired me to go deeper into each of the 70 red flags I shared.

So, starting this week, I’m diving into these red flags one at a time, grouped into categories to make them more digestible. My goal is to help you better recognize and address the subtle (and not-so-subtle) behaviors that can erode love and respect in relationships—often without you even realizing it.
This Week’s Focus: When You Feel Disrespected
When we think about healthy relationships, words like love, trust, and respect come to mind. But disrespect can sometimes slip in so quietly that you don’t see the damage until it’s already done. These subtle forms of disrespect might seem minor at first, but they slowly chip away at the foundation of your relationship.
Let’s start by unpacking some of the most common—but often overlooked—ways disrespect shows up in relationships:
Contemptuous Teasing
Teasing is often playful and can be a fun way to connect, but when it turns into sarcasm, belittling comments, or eye-rolling, it’s no longer fun. Instead, it becomes a way to put you down and make you feel small. Over time, contemptuous teasing erodes your confidence and leaves you hesitant to share your thoughts and feelings.
Making You Feel Stupid
One of the most damaging forms of disrespect is making you feel intellectually inferior. When a partner constantly corrects you, laughs at your ideas, or dismisses your opinions, it chips away at your confidence. In a healthy relationship, both partners lift each other up—but when you’re made to feel stupid, it’s hard to see yourself as an equal.
Name-Calling in Arguments
Disagreements are normal, but name-calling during an argument is not. This kind of disrespect goes beyond the issue at hand—it’s an attack on your character. These hurtful words linger long after the argument ends and can leave lasting emotional scars.
Mocking During Intimacy
Intimacy should be a space where you feel safe, valued, and loved. When a partner mocks you during these vulnerable moments, it transforms what should be a moment of connection into one of shame and insecurity. Whether they’re mocking your body or your preferences, it can cause lasting damage to your self-esteem.
Tools & Strategies for Addressing Disrespect
If you’re noticing any of these behaviors in your relationship, it’s important to take action—disrespect doesn’t just go away on its own. Here are some tools and strategies you can use to address it:
1. Use Assertive Communication
It’s important to express your feelings calmly and respectfully. Rather than getting defensive, focus on the behavior and how it affects you. For example, “When you correct me in front of others, I feel dismissed and devalued.”
2. Set Clear Boundaries
Boundaries are essential in any healthy relationship. Talk to your partner about what you will and won’t tolerate. For example, you could say, “When you correct me in front of others, I feel dismissed and devalued. If this behavior persists, I’ll excuse myself from the conversation,” and reinforce those boundaries consistently.
3. Seek Mutual Understanding
Sometimes disrespect stems from a deeper issue. Try to get to the root of what’s going on by asking questions and listening to your partner’s perspective. Then, share your feelings and work together to find a resolution.
4. Consider Counseling
If the disrespect continues, it might help to involve a neutral third party, like a couples therapist, to help you both understand the deeper dynamics at play and work toward healthier communication.
5. Prioritize Self-Respect
The way you treat yourself sets the tone for how others treat you. Prioritize your own emotional and mental well-being. If your partner continues to disrespect you, it’s worth considering whether the relationship is still serving you.
6. Know When to Walk Away
If chronic disrespect becomes the norm despite your efforts, it may be time to evaluate whether the relationship is right for you. No one should stay in an environment where they feel disrespected.
